Understanding Move Over and Speed Reduction Zones

Did you know that the law makes it mandatory for all drivers to pull off to the side of the road when an emergency vehicle passes by? Did you also know that the law makes it mandatory that all vehicles passing by a road construction, road maintenance or utility worker must slow down and make room for all vehicles to do their job safely?

When driving along any road or highway there are specific laws and guidelines for how to handle road construction or emergency vehicles trying to pass by. Every state has laws that govern what is known as “Move Over and Speed Reduction Zones” On average 121 deaths occur annually in the United States from road construction and utility workers being struck. Here are some tips for safe driving in these zones:

  • When an emergency vehicle passes by please pull off to the side of the road when an emergency vehicle passes by.
  • When you are driving through and passing by a road construction, road maintenance or utility worker please slow down and make room for all workers and vehicles involved in the construction so they can do their job safely.

The right thing to do it’s the law. People caught not abiding by these “rules and laws of vehicle driving” are heavily fined and can receive points against their license for reckless driving.

At Thompson Mazda we hope to encourage all our customers to drive safely and save lives by honoring these laws and those who serve the public safety.
