2018 Mazda 3 vs 2018 Ford Focus near Dundalk, MD

The compact sedan segment is filled with superior competitors that are duking it out for the top spot. It can be extremely difficult to pick out which of these options to pick, and with the car buying process already proving to be stressful, we are here to alleviate some of that stress and find which compact sedan is the clear winner. To start, we chose what we believe to be the best two options in the segment: the 2018 Mazda3 and the 2018 Ford Focus. Both of these sedans are sure to give you the features you're looking for while offering unique styles. The Mazda3 has moved around packages and features to make things clear and organized. The Sport trim now comes with a forward collision warning and mitigation system, and the Grand Touring trim comes with LED headlights. Otherwise, this extraordinary sedan has stayed very much true to past model years. The 2018 Focus has made no changes to the 2018 model year. Everything is pretty much the same as it was last year, with a few minor tweaks. Already we're excited about the new additions to the Mazda3, and we are eager to learn more about these two compact sedans.

2018 Mazda 3 Power & Handling

The 2018 Mazda3 is a sedan that comes with two impressive engine options. Both of them have a Skyactiv pedigree. The first engine is the standard 2.0-liter inline-4, which produces 155 horsepower and 150 pound-feet of torque. You can choose between either a manual transmission or an automatic transmission. The second engine is the 2.5-liter inline-4, creating 184 horsepower and 185 pound-feet of torque. This engine comes in both the sedan version and the hatchback option. There is also the option between transmission, whether you're more interested in the 6-speed manual or automatic. The 2.0-liter engine with the manual transmission gets 27/37 mpg, while the automatic version gets you 28/37 mpg. The 2.5-liter engine with a manual transmission gets you 25/34 mpg, while with the automatic option you'll get 27/36 mpg.

2018 Ford Focus Power & Handling

There are four engines to choose from with the Ford Focus. However, only the 1.0-liter turbocharged inline-3 gives off impressive fuel economy. This turbocharged 1.0-liter inline-3 creates 123 horsepower and 148 lb-ft of torque. The next engine is a 2.0-liter inline-4, producing 160 horsepower and 146 lb-ft of torque. The third engine is a turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-4, generating 252 horsepower and 270 lb-ft of torque. The final option is a turbocharged 2.3-liter inline-4. You can choose between a 5-speed manual transmission or a 6-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. While there are four engine options, the base engine is not very powerful, and the balance between power and fuel economy seems to be lost in these options.

2018 Mazda 3 Features & Design

Three trim levels are offered with the 2018 Mazda3. The first of these is the Sport trim, which comes with a rear spoiler, a 6-speaker stereo with two USB ports, emergency telematics, low-speed forward collision warning and automatic emergency braking, a rearview camera, a 7-inch touchscreen, Mazda Connect infotainment system, Bluetooth, a 60/40-split folding rear seat, keyless ignition, remote keyless entry, and 16-inch steel wheels. The Touring trim comes with heated front seats, a six-way power driver seat, simulated leather upholstery, dual-zone automatic climate control, keyless entry, and 18-inch alloy wheels. The highest offering is the Grand Touring. This trim comes with satellite radio, a 9-speaker Bose surround-sound system, leather upholstery, an upgraded display in the instrument panel, a digital speedometer, a sunroof, and LED exterior lights.

2018 Ford Focus Features & Design

There are four trim offerings with the Ford Focus. The first option, the S, comes with a 4-speaker sound system, a height-adjustable driver seat, a USB port, Bluetooth, power locks and mirrors, a 4.2-inch central display, Ford's MyKey, a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, air-conditioning, and keyless entry. The SE trim option adds a six-speaker sound system, rear air vents, a front center armrest, a trip computer, power rear windows, cruise control, and 16-inch alloy wheels. The highest option, the Titanium, comes with a rear center armrest, remote start, a leather-wrapped shift knob, eight-way power-adjustable driver seat, leather-trimmed seats, 17-inch wheels, and four-way adjustable headrests.

Conclusions

While both of these compact sedans have their perks, there is only one that seems to consistently provide power with style. The 2018 Mazda3 is a sedan that you can rely on, and one that will never get stale. This high-quality design, alongside the premium craftsmanship, allows little room for the Focus to try and take the top spot. There truly is no weakness with the Mazda, no matter how you look at it.
